Learn how to make a Cricut gift card holder for any occasion or holiday with our free gift box gift card holder SVG cut file!
If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know I am a fan of dressing up boring gift cards when giving as presents.
In the past I have given you a coffee cup gift card holder and a hot cocoa gift card holder (in my shop or free in my subscriber section), but this time we going super simple.
I have designed a present gift card holder that you can use in so many different ways! With different colored cardstock and sentiments, you can use these Cricut gift card holders for birthday presents, Christmas gifts, as a teacher gift, special occassions, or really any time of year.
Gift recipients love that extra personal touch when they open up a handmade gift card holder card that was made just for them! Use their favorite colors or sentiments as extra decorative pieces.
And one of the best things is that you can make these custom gift card holders with any Cricut machine… Cricut Explore Air line, Cricut Maker, Cricut Maker 3, or even the Cricut Joy (besides the print then cut part).
If you want to go one step further and add a To and From sentiment to the easy DIY gift card holders, you can use a Cricut pen with the draw function or foil tip to do that. If you want to check out this option, I have a full YouTube video at the bottom of this post that goes over those steps.
The gift card holder file will be down at the bottom of the post after the printable instructions!
First I’ll show you how to change a few things in Cricut Design Space (like score lines!) and where I find cute images to use as add-ons to the file in case you don’t have Cricut Access.
How to Make a Cricut Gift Card Holder
Making an adorable DIY gift card holder is the perfect way to give a boring gift card present! Easy and quick to cut and put together.
Materials
- Coordinating Cardstock
- White Cardstock for Print then Cut (optional)
- Double sided tape or other adhesive
- Foam pop adhesive (optional)
- Happy Birthday Gnome Image (optional)
Tools
- Cricut machine
- Printer that handles thicker paper
- Green cutting mat
- Scoring Wheel or Scoring Stylus
- Fine point blade and housing
Instructions
- Download the gift card holder template from below and upload into Cricut Design Space and add it to a new canvas. Ungroup.
- On the layers panel on the right, click on the layer that has the horizontal line to select it. Then change the Operation type to Score. If you don't have a scoring tool, you can delete the line or change it to draw so you know where to make the fold.
- With the grouped score line and longer rectangle selected, click on Attach in the lower right-hand corner.
- Optional: Find an image or phrase in Cricut Access or upload one and save it as Print then Cut image. (see Notes below for where I found mine)
- Size the image to fit over the square gift box. To add a white border around the image, click on it and then click on the Offset tool on the top toolbar. Use the sliders to change the size to what you like. Click on the colored square next to Operation to change the color. I changed mine to white.
- The next thing you'll need to do is select both the offset and the image and click on Flatten (lower right corner).
- Click on Make It. Follow all CDS prompts to load and cut your materials. For the print and cut image, CDS will send the image to your printer. Then place it in the top left-hand corner of a Cricut cutting mat and load it into the machine. Select light cardstock for your material setting.
- After your cutting machine has read and cut the image, unload the mat and peel your mat from the cardstock.
- Follow additional prompts to cut out the last two mats on medium cardstock setting. CDS will prompt you to insert your scoring wheel or scoring stylus to make the score line and then will pause and tell you to switch out for the fine point blade.
- Once all the pieces of the gift box gift card holder are cut, it's time to put them together!
- Fold the long rectangular piece on the score line. Use double sided tape or glue dots, secure a gift card to the top half of the rectangle.
- Fold the bottom half up and secure the edge under the tab.
- Glue the ribbon onto the front of one of the square sides. I like to make my top embellishments pop up, so I used double sided foam pieces to adhere the Happy Birthday image to the front of the gift.
- Place glue or double sided tape on the edge of three sides (two sides and bottom) of the square that will be the back. If using patterned paper, make sure the adhesive is on the wrong side of the paper.
- Now align the top of the gift card holder to the bottom cut out (make sure pocket is on the top) and make sure the edges are firmly attached. Insert the gift card slide out into the pocket you've made with the cute holder.
