If you have a brand new elf that is becoming a part of your holiday tradition, then your kids might need to be told of the rules of the elf (or reminded!).
Young kids often are so excited to see their favorite elf everybody and forget about the rules. Most of these rules are also talked about in the story book that comes with the Elf set.
Elf Christmas Tradition

Just to get you up to speed in case you are new to this crazy Christmas magic, an Elf on the Shelf appears every Christmas season starting either the day after Thanksgiving or on December 1st.
Kids are told that the elf is in their home watching how they behave and then returns back to the North Pole every night to report back to Santa Claus.
Since Santa is still deciding on his nice list, kids will need to have good behavior reported back if they don’t want to end up on the naughty list!
Then Santa’s scout elves return to your home each morning and end up in a new spot. Children are not to touch the elf or the elf will lose its magic and not be able to return to the North Pole.
Some parents dread thinking up a new location every night and others have so much fun making elaborate scenes for this fun tradition. I won’t tell you what camp I landed in when my kiddos were young!
But really, the elf is just a fun way to entice young children to be kind and do some good deeds during the month of December (without having to remind them all the time!).
Elf on The Shelf Rules
I have included four different versions of the official elf on the shelf rules letter for you to choose from.
One has no images on it, just the rules, and the other three have images of elves on the top – a girl scout elf, a boy scout elf, and a black elf.
Simply print out whichever rules printable you want and hang up somewhere that kids can see every day. You will probably be referring to the rules of their favorite Christmas tradition a lot!
Here are the elf rules. Number one is the most important thing for all kids to remember!
- Please do not touch me. I will lose my powers. (No more going back to the North Pole to report great behavior, eek!).
- I can only talk to Santa and other elves, but I can listen to you anytime.
- I report back to the North Pole each night. I can deliver letters for you if you like.
- I must return back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve until next year.
- Be kind to everyone!
