I love the Joy letters as decoration for a banister and ended up making my own for very cheap! Check out this tutorial on how to make one very easily!
Hi Friends! I have a quick, inexpensive, and easy DIY Christmas decoration for a banister for you today. I’ve seen giant letters going up staircases on Pinterest and knew I wanted to make my own banister Christmas decorations using materials I already had on hand.
I came up with this DIY JOY sign staircase decor and I love how it adds some extra rustic flair to my DIY Christmas decor!

- Foam board – I got mine at the dollar store. I used black.
- burlap fabric
- wreath – I used one I already had. Click here to read my tutorial on how to make a wreath!
- hot glue gun
Making DIY Large JOY Letters
So you’ll need to cut out a giant J and Y out of the foam board for the staircase letters. If you can draw letters nicely, draw large JOY letters on the foam boards with a pencil.
I do not have very good freehand skills so I cut a small J and Y out with my Cricut and used a homemade projector to magnify it so I could trace it (click here for tutorial!).
Cut out the letters with scissors or a TrueControl knife.
Then you are just going to hot glue burlap to the foam board. Make sure you have the letters the correct way – I learned the hard way and had to take one apart since I put the burlap on the wrong side!
Trim around the letter so there’s about an inch around the entire letter. Make slits in corners if the burlap isn’t lying flat.
To hang up the large banister Christmas decorations on my staircase I just stapled some twine to the back of the letters and tied them on the spindles. Super simple!
Using a Wreath for Large Joy Sign
I love the wreath I used since I can use it year-round with a few easy changes!
It was originally made as a DIY spring wreath. Then for each season, I pull out the seasonal stems and add new ones. I had fall branches that I just took out and stuck in a few white and pine cone stems.
That is my “O” for the joy staircase sign!
That’s it! It only cost me $1 to make a decoration for a banister for Christmas!! What do you think?
I also flocked all of my staircase garland and added lights. Flocking is so easy and addicting!!

What an adorable sign – I have never thought of attaching a sign like that to the rails of my stairs (our foyer is very similar to yours!). Great idea!
