Mr. and Mrs. Cake Topper DIY using a Cricut!

Make your own personalized Mr. and Mrs. cake topper with a Cricut and a few supplies.

Awww…. weddings!  When I got married 17 years ago, I made everything I could for the wedding myself.  We were on a small budget (yes, we’ve ALWAYS been frugal!!) but everything turned out perfect in my eyes.

Looking back I am so glad we opted not to spend much money on the wedding.  It goes by so fast and there are so many more major things to spend money on… ie. a HOUSE, right?

Back then there were no Cricuts or other cutting machines, so I did almost everything with just a printer.  Sometimes I want another wedding just so I can make everything for it!

So I got some of my wedding crafting out by putting together a few easy and cheap wedding decorations that you can make in minutes, including this easy and elegant Mr. and Mrs. cake topper.

Cricut Design Space Tutorial: Designing Unique Cake Toppers

The first thing you’ll want to do is use your cutting machine software to design what you want your donut toppers to look like.  In Cricut Design Space, it is pretty easy since the Mr. and Mrs. part is a file in Cricut Access.

Watch the video tutorial below to watch how I designed this wedding file in Cricut Design Space and put everything together.

Mr. and Mrs. Cake Topper Cricut Instructions

Once everything is designed, it’s time to cut out the Cricut wedding cake topper.  Adding the vinyl on top of the Kraft board is totally optional.  You can leave it all one color or add different adhesive vinyl colors to any part of it.

If you want the DIY cake topper thicker, you could cut out two of the welded Kraftboard pieces and glue them together.

The Cricut will prompt you for each mat.  Select your material, place material on a Cricut mat, insert mat, and press the flashing C button to cut.

Make sure to change the material setting in between each different material you are cutting.  Click on the “Material Set To” at the top of the screen and the material menu will pop back up.  If using an older machine, turn the dial.

Once everything is cut out, remove the Kraftboard from its mat.  I used my spatula to lift it off.

Weed off the extra vinyl if you are using it.

Assembling the Cake Topper DIY

You can use transfer tape to apply the vinyl on the topper or do it by hand.

Align the vinyl and scrape down on the transfer tape and vinyl.

Then peel off the transfer tape.

I love the metallic look of it!

I then hot glued some wood sticks on the back side of the cheap Mr. and Mrs. Cricut wedding cake topper.  Now it’s all ready to stick inside a wedding cake or donuts.

Instructions

  1. Watch video tutorial if you need help designing this in Cricut Design Space. The Mr. and Mrs. is a file in Cricut Access so you'll just need to weld it to a heart and the last name. Add a long rectangle to the bottom of the name and weld everything together.
  2. Duplicate the last name and heart and cut those out of adhesive vinyl of your choice.
  3. Cut out the wedding topper out of Cricut Kraftboard. You could cut out two and glue them together if you want it thicker.
  4. Apply the heart vinyl on top of the heart.
  5. Add transfer tape to the last name and apply the vinyl right on top of the Kraftboard.
  6. Hot glue wood sticks to the back to make it easier to stick into cake or donuts.
  7. Stick on top of a wedding cake or donut platter and enjoy!

Notes

Make sure to watch the full video tutorial in the post to see how to design in Cricut Design Space if you need help with that step.

Adding vinyl is an optional step. You can also add it to the Mr. & Mrs. part too.
