The short answer is that a scavenger hunt is a great way to keep your kids busy and the best part, is they are fun! It’s also a fun way to get them to enjoy what’s around them and see things they might not normally see.
A scavenger hunt can also be a great way to open conversations about things in nature and to hear what your kids think about the specific object and then a great teaching opportunity for you to tell them more.
There are a few different ways to use the nature scavenger hunt. You can have each person participating find the object and check the box on the printable scavenger hunt.
Or if you are allowing electronics, each person (or small groups of parent and child) can take a picture of the item on the list and share it with the rest of the family members or friends once they are finished.
For some of the items, you can make a sensory scavenger hunt out of it and have your child touch the nature item and describe what it’s like. Using all five senses, they can describe what it feels, sounds, looks, smells, and possibly tastes like (but the last one will probably be limited, lol!) Just be careful for the poison ivy!!
Make it a little friendly competition by having walky-talkies so you can yell that you’ve found something or scavenger hunt clues (or as a way to keep track of the kiddos!)
What’s Included in Camping Scavenger Hunt Printable
I’ve included two different scavenger hunts with printables.
The first free camping scavenger hunt is for older children that can read. The fun camping scavenger hunt list includes a list of items such as moss, feather, berries, muddy rock, and more. There is a checkbox next to each item to find to keep track of their finds. This printable would be great for a nature walk!
Make sure not to leave the younger kids out! The littles will have so much fun running around looking for different camping accessories.
The second outdoor scavenger hunt is for young children that can’t quite read or early readers and need to stay close. This campground scavenger hunt has pictures of different items that you can find at a campsite.
