How to Make a Unicorn Valentine Box

I have a video on how I made this unicorn Valentines box at the top so make sure to watch it if these steps don’t make sense!

Covering the Valentines Box

The first thing you’ll need is a box or bag. I found this Valentine card box at the Dollar Tree and knew it would be super easy to make over.

Two pieces of 8.5×11 pieces of cardstock worked perfectly to cover the box. I didn’t even cut any of it off!

I used my scoring stylus and a ruler to make scoring lines so I could bend the cardstock easier but this part is optional.

I made one line a few inches from the side.

My box was 6.5 inches across so I measured 6.5 inches from the first score line and made another.

Make the same lines on the second piece of cardstock. Now bend the score lines and it will fit nicely over the box. The second piece will need to be turned over so the sides overlap.

Attach the cardstock (or you could use paper) to the box. Glue one piece to each side. The flaps will fold over the short sides and just glue those so they overlap.

I just used a glue stick but you could also use a hot glue gun or tape glider.

Designing Unicorn Valentine in Cricut Design Space

I used my Cricut cutting machine to cut out the unicorn face and name to apply to the box. You could also find a picture online, print it, and cut it out if you don’t have a Cricut. There’s a cute one here at pixabay.com.

I found a unicorn head image in Cricut Design Space and sized it to fit the box (about 5 inches wide).

Also, if you are new to CDS, make sure to check out my series of Cricut Design Space 101 tutorials to get started.

I wanted a back layer to cut out so that the cardstock unicorn head would be a little thicker so I duplicated the unicorn image.

Then with the duplicate selected I clicked on weld.

Then I was left with one layer to use to place everything else on and to thicken up the cut out.

I changed the color so it would cut out on my eyelash mat (both grey).

Cut out all the layers with whatever material you’d like to use. I ended up using a holographic vinyl for the unicorn horn and glitter cardstock for some of the layers to add some fun!

If you need additional help cutting multiple mats make sure to check out my tutorial on making Cricut invitations.

Then glue all the layers together! I had to look at design space on my laptop to see how some of the layers went!

Once the unicorn head is all put together glue it to the top of the box and glue on the eyelashes.

I used a multi-layer font, so I had to glue the layers together and then I glued them onto the front of the box.

Putting Together Unicorn Valentines

The free unicorn Valentine printable will contain four different unicorn Valentines cards to use. So simply print out the number of Valentines you need divided by four and follow these simple steps to put them together.

Once you’ve downloaded the unicorn Valentine printable from below, print it out on either white cardstock or white paper. Cut the individual unicorn cards out with a paper trimmer or use scissors.

Have your child write their name on the bottom of the cards – the perfect time for handwriting practice without it being a chore!

If you print it out on paper, I’d advise mounting the paper on coordinating cardstock to make it sturdier when holding a little gift. Use double-sided tape or a glue stick to adhere it to a coordinating cardstock sheet.

The best part of this printable Valentine is you can add quite a few different non-candy Valentines to the front or back of the card like pencils, rings, stickers, little notebooks, glowsticks, etc. Or you can add a lollypop or little candy.

You can make a slit in the cardstock as I did in the Christmas printable tags as a fun way to attach a pencil.

You can also apply some double-sided tape on the front side and stick down a pencil. It seems to hold really well!

Or you can tape a treat on the back of the card.

Or you can attach a ring to the front side of the unicorn Valentines by cutting a small slit on the front side and pushing the ring in.

Then I cut a piece of tape in half and taped down the backside to make sure it wasn’t going anywhere!

That’s it! So many different fun ideas when giving unicorn Valentines to school mates!
