n the past, I’ve given you You’ve Been Booed boo sign and You’ve Been Boozed printables, and this year I have a new free printable to put in a gift basket during the month of October.

This fun Halloween tradition is super easy to start with just a little bit of time on your part. All you need is our free You’ve Been Spooked printable file and a basket of treats!

You’ve Been Spooked Tradition Info

So, what is booing or spooking about?

The basis of a neighborhood spook is to spread treats and cheer to others in secret. Spooking is a great way for the whole neighborhood to get excited for Halloween time.

Usually, one neighbor starts the fun activity in early October by leaving some treats and printable signs at someone’s front door or front window.

It takes quite a few weeks for the boos to spread throughout the neighborhood and for everyone to get their own boo basket. One person puts together two Spook or Boo buckets filled with homemade treats, simple decor, favors, etc, and puts the instruction sheets into each of them.

Spooking Your Neighbors

The really fun part of this tradition is trying to guess who left the bag of treats. My kids loved getting their own boo bags and trying to figure out who left them.

The other fun part of this spooky fun is  not getting caught. The kids have so much fun coming up with a plan on whose house they are going to boo and waiting for it to get dark.

Then they’ll sneak up and leave it on the doorstep and knock (or ring the doorbell) and run to take cover.

Yes, a good old doorbell ditch with permission! I admit, the crazy presence of all the Ring Doorbells and security camera puts a damper on this fun but finding a place where it won’t be seen can be a fun challenge. Or parents can just not let their kids see who it was!

Once the recipients get their treat bag, they have two days to print out the You’ve Been Spooked Halloween printables, put together new buckets, and deliver them.

If you love the idea of spreading joy, make sure to elf your neighbors and friends during the Christmas season and egg your friends at Easter

You’ve Been Spooked Bucket Ideas

The small treats you give to your friends and neighbors can be simple items from dollar stores to homemade Fall or Halloween decor. The Dollar Tree and Target dollar spot has great plastic Halloween buckets or I personally like giving the large Halloween candy bin.
